We are working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Hennepin County Emergency Preparedness to prepare everyone for the winter weather during Super Bowl LII. Although we don’t know exactly what Mother Nature will bring, we do know that we can help fans prepare by knowing how to dress appropriately and what to do in emergency situations.
In Minneapolis, what does it mean when a Snow Emergency is declared? Snow Emergencies are called after significant snowfall, and before 6:00 p.m. on any given day. During a Snow Emergency, special parking rules go into effect, enabling City crews to plow streets and emergency vehicles to travel safely. Slow down and get to your destination safely. Even if the roads simply look wet they could still be slick due to ice or slush.
Winter Storm Warnings are issued when heavy snow, ice or sleet is expected or occurring with significant travel impacts.
Winter Storm Watches are issued when heavy snow, ice or sleet is possible but the location, intensity and impacts are not certain.
Change wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat. Wet clothing loses all of its insulating value and transmits heat rapidly. Dress in layers and wear a warm hat and gloves when it’s cold. Cover exposed skin to reduce the effects of cold temperatures and wind chill. Don’t forget your hat and gloves!
